Dal fry or dal tadka is a simple Indian dish made using lentils, toor or arhar dal, also known as split pigeon peas. This is a simple dal, made without using onion or garlic. The flavors come from the tempering made with some cumin seeds and asafoetida, give this dal a very distinct flavor and taste. Simple and delicious to make, this dal is one of the most common dals made in most of the Indian households. Ingredients:
1 cup Arhar/Toor/ Split pigeon pea lentil, washed and rinsed
3 cup water
1 medium tomato, chopped
1 inch ginger, grated
1 green chili, chopped
½ tablespoon turmeric powder
½ tablespoon red chili powder
⅛ teaspoon hing/asafoetida
2 dry whole red chili
½ tablespoon cumin seeds
2 tablespoon oil
Salt to taste
Handful of fresh coriander for garnish

Instructions for Instant Pot Cooking:
Step 1: Turn on Manual mode for 7 min. Add dal, water, tomato, ginger, turmeric powder, salt to taste. Let pressure release naturally, around 10 min.
Step 2: Prepare tempering on a stove top, heat a sauce pan or tadka pan, add oil, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and whole dry red chili. Turn off the heat, add red chili powder, and add this tempering over the dal. Mix well. Garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve hot with rice. Enjoy!!
Instructions for Pressure Cooker Cooking:
Step 1: On a high heat, in a pressure cooker, add dal, water, tomato, ginger, turmeric powder, salt to taste. Close the pressure cooker, after the first whistle, lower the heat to low, and cook for 7 min. Let pressure release naturally, around 10 min.
Step 2: Prepare tempering on a stove top, heat a sauce pan or tadka pan, add oil, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and whole dry red chili. Turn off the heat, add red chili powder, and add this tempering over the dal. Mix well. Garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve hot with rice. Enjoy!!
Instructions for Stove top Cooking:
Step 1: On a high heat, in a pot, add dal, water, tomato, ginger, turmeric powder, salt to taste.Cover and bring it to a boil, lower the heat to low, and cook dal is cooked.
Step 2: Prepare tempering on a stove top, heat a sauce pan or tadka pan, add oil, cumin seeds, asafoetida, and whole dry red chili. Turn off the heat, add red chili powder, and add this tempering over the dal. Mix well. Garnish with fresh cilantro. Serve hot with rice. Enjoy!!
